See What You really Need to Start Your Business without Capital

What if I told you that you don't need a capital to start a business? Would you give me the “Are you kidding me?” look? Seriously, you don’t, what you need is a skill, a “brain” and a strategy. Key word is START, I’m not saying you don’t need money in running a business.


You may have heard me or read my story, that I started business with a laptop and a brain. I say that a lot. This is not only true for me, it’s true for a lot of people that I know, even personally. Haven’t you heard of the small beginnings and garage-office testimonies even for organizations such as Microsoft and Facebook?

Some years back, while at Ghana Institute of Journalism, I seized an opportunity, providing Graphic Designing service for students on campus and companies outside of campus, using my laptop. With this same laptop, I reached out to organizations looking out for volunteering opportunities and partnerships. I was attending programs, workshops and seminars that were relevant to the industry I was venturing most of which were free.

Before you let your mind deceive you while you have folded your arms, that you need money first, ask yourself one question… “how far have I gone without capital?” and which part of the business do I need money to invest?
This is what separated me from lot of people and still does. My “brain”

There are thousands of tertiary students who own a laptop or computer today. Let me tell you without research that majority of them watch movies and series on them aside doing a few assignments and that’s all for them. They have the latest series from Africa, Europe, Asia, name them. While crying for money to start up an idea, they have not thought for a second what they could do with these same laptops and even phones to generate income or start a brand. These same people who have not thought outside the box complain that they need capital or loan to start a business…. (Continuing... )

In my next post, still on “YOU DON’T NEED CAPITAL TO START A BUSINESS”, I’ll tell you how I almost failed thinking I needed money at some point and how the lack of it helped me work out a strategy. I’ll tell you why you may fail taking off with a loan and why I recommend “starting small” for young people.

PS. This series is based on my experience and nobody's. We can debate it our with our opinions but you don't have to force it if doesn't work for you. Also, In order not to make it extra extra long, I’m really working on length so post will be in bits.
